By the law of commutativity, one and a half is equivalent to half and a one, and “a” already refers to one, so you can just say “half and a”.

given that addition in the English language is represented by “and,” wouldn’t the law of commutativity indicate equivalence between “one and a half” and, not “half and a one”, but “a half and one”?
