yeah, I think about this Bible verse a lot (obviously you don’t really care about the Bible but still):

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

— Proverbs 26:4-5 ESV

It basically says that there’s no good way to respond. If you respond to them, “fools” usually ignore reason and logic, and instead resort to using deceit, scoffing at wisdom, or becoming angry and abusive. (Sound like anyone we know?) But if you don’t respond, their foolishness goes unchallenged. So sometimes you have to respond and show them the truth so that they (and other people listening) can see the foolishness of their words.
