Following two days of voting, the college of cardinals has reached a majority within the 133 electors present, and they’ve surprisingly decided the next Pope should be Cardinal Robert Prevost.
The laity of the church had been speculating since the death of Pope Francis just a few short weeks ago who the next Pope could be. Many had assumed it would be among figures like Pietro Parolin, Peter Erdo, Luis Tagle, or Robert Sarah. This was due to the strong conservative voice online in Catholic circles, many wishing for a push-back against some of the confusion and division left behind after Pope Francis’s papacy.
Betting markets had also shown the same figures, yet also had been similarly divided among the candidates. Parolin was leading with 27%, and Tagle was closely trailing at 22%. The figures with large numbers below them were Matteo Zuppi with an 11% stake, Pierbattista Pizzaballa at 10%, and Erdo at 7%. None of these proved correct, however.
Since the process of choosing the next Pope during a conclave is extremely secretive, not much is known as to why Cardinal Robert Prevost, or His Eminence Pope Leo the XIV, was voted into the papacy. Some of his stronger qualities come in his recent important post in leading the Dicastery for Bishops, which oversees the appointments of new Bishops. Some other background information is that he was born in the United States, specifically in Chicago Illinois, & was Bishop of Chiclayo from 9/26/2015 →1/30/2023.
