5/7/25 - Mark Carney shuts down US threats to annex Canada

On today, 5/7/25, new Canadian prime minister Mark Carney visited the United States White House for a meeting with US president Donald Trump to discuss Mr. Trump’s repeated insistence that the United States should annex Canada.

Since President Trump’s inauguration, he has been publicly pushing for the annexation of Canada to turn it into the “51st State.” Despite multiple statements by former Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau that “Canada will never be the 51st State,” president Trump has intensified the threat by imposing hefty tariffs on the country.

Freshly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Trump today to discuss these threats directed at Canada, in order to fulfill his campaign promise of doing so. Despite beginning the meeting with pleasantries, Prime Minister Carney found himself arguing over President Trump’s repeated statements of his desire to annex Canada. When confronted with these statements, Carney replied “[Canada] is not for sale. It won't be for sale ever.”

Despite this response, President Trump did not falter in his declarations. After the meeting, when asked whether there was anything that could be done to lift the tariffs on Canada, he simply replied “No.”

It is expected that President Trump’s steadfast insistence on imposing tariffs on Canada will create lasting tension between the two long-allied countries.
