I've heard that there's an abandoned subway line somewhere near an impoverished area. do you know any more about this
i know about the existence of abandon stations but i haven’t heard of a whole subway line abandoned! i can’t really find anything else from a quick google search. sorry!
that's fine thanks for trying though. I just found the video I heard it from and it's aparantly on Staten Island and was abandoned and replaced in the 50s. here's the video btw: https://youtube.com/shorts/BuEGtEWmmLk?si=RDmn1i3_rPJ541nl
sorry i didn’t realize that external images don’t post? here: https://www.welcomepickups.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/new-york-taxi-2-scaled-e1609767218649.jpg
Are there illegal immigrants?
Are there rats?
Why is the poverty rate so high?
Is there cocaine everywhere?
Why is crime so common there?
Why are people fleeing New York?
yes, a lot. illegal immigration is not sustainable and hurts native new yorkers who are already disadvantaged because shelters are full and the government is buying out hotels for immigrants but not homeless new yorkers
yes
cost of living is through the roof, unemployment, and a huge income inequality. new york is home to some of the richest people in the u.s. and also the poorest
like in all major cities, there is, though i wouldn’t say “everywhere” as it’s more in certain areas of the city
crime is more prevalent in major cities. however, new york is a pretty safe city. you can see these numbers linked are relatively low for a city of over 8 million people. https://www.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/p00099/nypd-january-2024-citywide-crime-statistics
people are fleeing new york because, like all cities, there is crime, homelessness, and especially with the immigration crisis there are too many people coming in. additionally, taxes in new york city are one of the highest in the country. with more options to remote working, many people no longer have a need to live in the city if they don’t need to work here.
Thanks! that comment was a joke tho :)
no offense to you, nyc or anything
they are genuine questions! nyc has a ton of negatives and isn’t just rainbows and sunshine.
do you know about the abandoned subway platform that’s been left to rot for decades at the chambers street station bc the mta was too lazy to spend money on demolishing/renovating it
I love it bc it serves as a poignant reminder of how lazy and uncaring people can be when it comes to preserving things that are old/no longer serve their original purpose and one could also use it as a metaphor for how we treat senior citizens
i haven’t heard about that one at chambers street, but i have about the one at hoyt–schermerhorn streets. i guess the mentality of the mta is that “well if it’s not doing any harm we might as well leave it.” they already spend so much money, leaving these platforms instead of demolishing them isn’t the worst thing in the world. but yeah looking at those pictures, that platform at chambers street looks so nasty and crusty, at least the public can’t get to it.
would you believe me if I said i’ve never lived in New York and only know about the chambers street platform bc of a football video about why kickoffs are stupid
