they run the largest websites (essentially have the power to prevent any browser from reaching mass market share), and fund every major browser. they practically subsidize the iphone btw. they're a major contributor to the web platform specs, and basically wrote their own web protocol.

as for the internet, that's more debatable. but they do run a major DNS provider and do a lot of peering.
