That is true, but you should also consider how a backfire effect could end up reinforcing deeply-held beliefs.
I would contend that one’s mindset matters the most when engaging with others who hold different opinions. If someone engages with people holding opposing beliefs to “prove them wrong” or to pick out the worst arguments, they will be only reinforcing their beliefs, not challenging them.
