Hot take: Fines should be based on your income. The bigger your income, the bigger the fine.
Fines are something used to discourage someone doing something, but it’s hardly discouraging for a millionaire who can happily take a parking ticket whenever they like, they aren’t above the law.
what if i was to make billions of dollars, then spend all of that on assets… i then get a low paying job at a place like McDonald, then i sell all of my assets for cash(so the gov cant tax me and base my fines off of taxes)? making me able to commit crimes without having to pay a ton on fines?
well don’t billionares make it so that all the money they are receiving isn’t income?
There should be a minimum though, otherwise I could committ a bunch of crimes if I had no income. Furthermore, you forget that a lot of extremely rich people actually use special methods to put their income really low for to avoid taxes, so this would just be harsher on people with medium income.
Yeah of course with the first one, with the second point 1. Fines should be the same for middle income as they are now and loopholes can be for everyone but it would be more discouraging
I see, in that case, sure, doesn’t hurt people much anyways
I think there is an easy way to fix parking ticket, which is to make parking tickets go on your record. Even if you have a hundred billion dollars, you still can’t speed whenever you want, because if you get enough tickets, they will take your license away (like if you get too many DUIs). Although this is only a solution for driving-related fines. So your idea would still be good in other scenarios.
They do here, if you get like 8 tickets or something (not parking, normal police tickets) you get your license suspended I think, and if you get like 13 you get your license taken away. It’s a state by state thing though
I think rich people could use the same strategies they do to avoided taxes. (Like how jeff bezos doesn’t make money, he just earns more amazon stock, which is tax free) But I definitely agree with you, this would be great.
I agree
Although there should be a limit to avoid paying £12,000,000 for a parking ticket, if you have too much money/too little and can’t pay you should do something like volunteering public service for an hour
I wouldn’t say community service but there should be cut off points on both spectrums definitely, maybe it should be done in sections of wealth like tax
