i’ve just made several updates to toastyroast (my site that roasts you + provides tips to improve)

here’s the changelog:

  • switched the model to use Gemini 1.5 Flash, instead of 1.0 Pro Vision

    • it should be a lot faster

  • rewrote it to return JSON responses, making it easier to parse.

    • you should receive less errors!

  • switch the main prompt to be in system instructions.

    • not sure what that changes, but it makes the main prompt less cluttered.

if you still haven’t checked it out (or want to try it again now that it’s fixed), it’s available at toastyroast.radi8.dev :)

I usually listen to different artists when I'm in different mood or state of minds. here's a guide to my music listening style:

  • when I'm sad I usually just listen to my liked songs since it has a variety of stuff

  • when I'm questioning the world (i.e. how the world is so cool/how things are where they are) I listen to Tally Hall, Miracle Musical, and David Holmes

  • when I want flashbacks to concerts I've been to in the past, I listen to Garbage and Metric

  • when I'm happy I listen to Oasis and Noel Gallagher

  • when I'm feeling silly I listen to Lemon Demon and Weird Al

  • when I'm feeling jazzy I listen to the UoM Facult Jazz Band, Michael Buble

  • I also sometimes just go through phases where I listen to random artists that I like (those listed above) for a week before listening to a different one

now, I'm curious - what do you listen to?

This is the official account to @toaks ‘s Minecraft server, open to everyone here on wasteof, where you can see downtime, updates, news, and more.

Connect to the game on Minecraft Java 1.20.4 with toaks.mc.radi8.dev (thanks for letting me use your domain, @radi8).

Rules:

This server is invite-only. Please don’t spread around the join link, or I will have to enable whitelist.

Stealing, killing, griefing (to an extent) is allowed, but hacking is not tolerated. Any amount of cheating will result in a ban.

Be respectful. Everyone is allowed to play on this server (who is on wasteof) and that includes minors! No amount of swearing will be tolerated. To clarify, you can say hell, you can’t say F&$%.

Downtime may occur when I am unable to be around the server to maintenance it (ie, I am in the mountains 5 hours from my house). This will result in indefinite downtime until I am back.

You can use various commands on the server. Do /kit info to learn more information on that.

Have fun, miners!

my thoughts on the framework laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 5 7640U) after using it for 5 months

⚠ big post upcoming (but please read! this post cost me $1400) ⚠

here's my experience after using the framework laptop 13 for 5 months:

  • it’s built for customization:

    • it’s great for those who want to build their own laptop and screw around with hardware.

  • it has great performance:

    • it was a significant jump compared to my previous laptop.

    • it can run lightweight AI apps like chat bots and voice recognition models smoothly.

    • it handles Minecraft at really good frame rates (to me) (1200+ FPS without shaders, 130 FPS with ProjectLuma shaders). I also play some other games like Cities: Skylines and more using Proton, and getting 60+ FPS playing those.

    • it runs Virtual Machines (VMs) without performance drops while multitasking.

  • my thoughts on switching to Linux:

    • i’ve switched to Ubuntu 22.04 and I’ve loved! I have no regrets and no plans to switch distros.

    • my transition was smooth thanks to my prior experience on my Raspberry Pi, home server, and VPS.

  • it’s great for my workflow:

    • it handles demanding tasks like programming with 300+ Firefox tabs, multiple VSCodium windows, Spotify, Discord, etc. without becoming sluggish, at all.

    • it’s great for schoolwork on multiple monitors.

    • i wrote code (in Bash utilizing ectool) to control keyboard lights – it was a fun learning experience! :)

  • battery life:

    • it’s decent at around 5-6 hours unplugged during use. not a big deal since i mostly keep it plugged in at my desk with battery charge limiting enabled to 80%, so i don’t kill my battery.

  • my specs:

    • 1TB internal m.2 SSD

    • 250GB external expansion card (backups)

    • AMD Ryzen 5 7640U mainboard

    • 32GB RAM (16x2)

    • green bezel (because why not?)

    • the Framework’s open source design lets me potentially design my own expansion cards with my (admittedly limited) PCB skills (more about this soon :D) in the future.

overall, the framework laptop 13 has been a great experience! it's certainly a powerful & customizable machine which, in my opinion, is perfect for developers and power users. if you’re thinking of getting one, I would 10/10 recommend.
