in case you missed it

a new position on the scratch foundation’s website went up recently, and the job description confirms that scratch 4.0 is in development. says it’ll feature a “re-imagined online community and creative ai”… whatever that means

no word of a release date, but that’s understandable. i’m actually kind of excited for this, i feel like scratch’s online community hasn’t been working super well recently so hopefully this’ll fix some of those issues. as for the ai thing… please no. so many things can go wrong with that…

scratch will do anything but add a return block

Ignore the AI thing, the fact that Scratch 4 is in development is already weird by itself

I’ve been in the assertion that Scratch 4 isn’t releasing for so long that when the Team wrote that the time is happening, it feels… contradictory.

Considering they’re just now publishing the job opening I don’t think it’s going to release anytime soon, like multiple years.

I hate companies trying to rub AI in every element they have to make it even more shitty... let's hope Scratch doesn't go in that path I mean I don't really expect them to go that way, it's not one of *those* companies, and they're non-profit too so they won't do it for sales or money

Addendum: According to this Scratch blog article, AI image generation isn’t going to be added to Scratch any time soon. So whatever the AI thing actually is, it’s not going to be that.

Still though, we really don’t need AI added to Scratch for all of the reasons that have been pointed out in the comments.

Wherever this is used (and I could only see it used for code or costumes) will be detrimental to the entire website. learning to code is the entire point of the website, is why projects are open-source, and is the big separator between good and bad projects. and I am just going to go insane if people start using AI in costumes or thumbnails.

this. why would any beginner feel like learning themselves if they can just ask a robot to do all the work for them and learn absolutely nothing?

Why AI????????

Sure, instead of Imagine, Create, Share we’ll do Imagine, Write a Prompt, Share 👍🏼

or worse:

imagine, write a prompt, get completely incorrect results, share

yea pretty much

AI? bruh
