wasteof.money officially launched 1 year ago! here are some wasteof facts:

• wasteof.money officially “launched” a year ago today (12th june 2021), but there was a development version that goes back further (around the 11th of november 2020).

• that version, named wasteof.money never was properly launched, and was only accessible through dev.wasteof.money. the database was wiped several times since it launched, but i have a backup of the last version of the site before it shut down.

• fun fact: wasteof.money was actually open source: https://github.com/jeffalo/wasteof.money

• eventually, i rewrote the entire site with a better codebase and more modern UI, named wasteof2. it started fresh with a new database, a year ago, and is likely what you’re using to read this post!

• the next version of wasteof.money will be wasteof3, which shares a database schema to wasteof2 (no data will be lost), and is currently accessible at beta.wasteof.money. once it reaches full feature parity and is tested enough, it will replace wasteof2.

and some news regarding the site:

• i am leaving for a trip starting on the 13th of june, and ending on the 17th. until then, i will not be able to access the internet, so i have added a new admin, @rirurin to take care of the site temporarily. thanks @rirurin!

• i have got the new server working (long story short, i actually did receive the correct configuration from the ebay seller, but the server didn’t realize that the components changed ).

• wasteof.money will likely move to the new server soon, and hopefully this should allow for a better performing site.

ok botting rules (subject to change, but effective immediately)

• bots must be clearly labelled as such, and link to the maintainer’s account in the bio or something. in the future, there might be a bot label.

• bots may not perform social actions such as: following, liking, reposting

• bots may not post individual posts automatically, with the exception of “daily/weekly/monthly x” accounts, which can post a maximum of one post per day at a fixed time.

• bots may not reply to posts/comments unless explicitly triggered:

• bots must be triggered by @ mentions, or wall comments on the bot account’s wall.

• bots should use the wasteof2 api (api.wasteof.money), as the beta api is subject to change and is designed for internal usage

• bots should not poll my server too hard, try using the socket.io api to only perform actions once a mention message is received.

  • to do this, use a server side socket.io client, and listen for updateMessageCount events. when the count increases, request the unread message list and respond to new mention comments.

it is really cool to see all the unique ways that the api is being used, but let’s try to keep it a little bit controlled. :)

out of my sample size of two, i can confidently say that ebay sellers have scammed me 100% of the time i order stuff

it has 128GB of ram and 9TB of raw storage (probably 6TB usable with the correct raid configuration) it’s going to be pretty exciting and a massive upgrade from the old dell optiplex i’m currently using
